The majestic, isolated peak of Mount Rishiri watches over the area.
Rishiri, a breathtaking island floating in the farthest reaches of the ocean.

At the center of this circular island, which has a circumference of approximately 60 km, stands Mount Rishiri, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, with an elevation of 1721m. The harsh natural environment has given rise to exquisite seafood and breathtaking natural beauty. Let's take a stroll around the two towns of Rishiri Fuji and Rishiri.

Cape Pesi summit
With a 360-degree panoramic view
View of Japan's northernmost point

"Peshi Cape," a scenic spot easily accessible upon arrival at Oshidomari Port by ferry, offers breathtaking views. From its 93-meter-high observation deck, you can enjoy a dynamic panorama of Mount Rishiri to the south, Rebun Island to the northwest, and mainland Hokkaido to the east. The summit is about a 20-minute walk away, and along the way, you'll find sights such as the graves of Aizu samurai and the Oshidomari Lighthouse.

Himenuma

Located on the north side of Mount Rishiri, it has a well-maintained walking trail that circles the area by approximately 800 meters.

Otatomari Swamp

This is the largest lake on Rishiri Island, and a scenic spot surrounded by a primeval forest of Sakhalin spruce.

Sea urchin rice bowl
Shines like a jewel
Savor the flavors of summer

Sea urchins are harvested from June to September. In Rishiri, two types of sea urchins are caught: the northern purple sea urchin and the Ezo green sea urchin. Various restaurants offer sea urchin dishes, including sea urchin rice bowls. The subtle scent of the sea and the rich flavor that melts in your mouth will leave you with an impression of authentic sea urchin cuisine.

Minamihama Wetland

A precious wetland with a unique environment in Japan where raised bogs and low-lying bogs coexist.

Senboshi Misaki Park

There's a rugged coastline formed by cooled and solidified lava flows, and you might even spot seals in the summer.

Sea urchin shucking experience
Boarding a small boat
Now, let's start shucking sea urchins!

At Kamui Coast Park, you can experience "sea urchin shucking" from June to September. This is the only facility of its kind in Japan, where you can use the same fishing gear as the island's fishermen, crack and shuck the sea urchins yourself, and then enjoy a fresh tasting right there. On calm, sunny days, you can even experience harvesting sea urchins using the same methods as the fishermen from a small boat moored at the quay. Since the sea urchins feed on Rishiri kelp, their exquisite taste is guaranteed.
