Matsumoto Castle and its surrounding town
Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure, stands against the backdrop of the Northern Alps. Surrounded by a moat, the beautiful castle tower and the surrounding natural scenery offer a truly refreshing experience. The castle town still boasts rows of classic buildings and shops, allowing you to stroll through the area feeling as if you've stepped back in time. Be sure to also visit the numerous springs that gush forth throughout the city.
Local specialty: Soba noodles
Soba noodles, traditionally enjoyed as a special treat on celebratory occasions, are fragrant with every bite and have a wonderfully smooth texture. The reason for this delight lies in the unique climate of this region. The significant temperature fluctuations characteristic of mountainous areas cultivate high-quality grains, and the pure water flowing from the Alps further enhances their flavor. Savor the bounty of this land and enjoy the soba to your heart's content.
Surrounded by greenery and the sound of flowing water
Located about two hours from the nearest Matsumoto Airport, Kamikochi, at an altitude of approximately 1500m, is a mountain resort with unspoiled nature. You can enjoy sightseeing starting with a light trek of about an hour, and in spring you can enjoy the contrast between remaining snow and fresh greenery, in summer you can see rare mountain plants, and in autumn the leaves turn golden. Please note that everything is closed during the winter season.
Piping hot outdoor bath
Nozawa Onsen, boasting a long history, has numerous natural hot springs. Within the steaming village, there are 13 public baths with free-flowing, natural spring water – and best of all, they're free! What's surprising is the intense heat, a hallmark of naturally occurring spring water! Locals also use these baths, so if you happen to be there, they might even teach you the proper way to enjoy them.
