The energy of nature
Kumamoto Prefecture is overflowing with abundance.
Kumamoto Prefecture boasts the vast grasslands and dynamic landscapes created by volcanoes in Aso,
A place where history, exemplified by Kumamoto Castle, can be felt close at hand.
Furthermore, it is a hot spring paradise, with hot springs bubbling up all over the prefecture.
Local specialties such as horse sashimi and karashi renkon (lotus root with mustard) are also a major draw.
There are plenty of diverse attractions, including nature, culture, and gourmet food.
Aso Nakadake Crater
Volcanoes that evoke a sense of the Earth's birth are truly dynamic. Mount Aso is still active, and you can see its crater (4km in circumference) emitting white plumes of smoke up close. The sight of emerald green hot springs bubbling up in the crater, surrounded by fierce, rugged lava, is truly mystical and sure to thrill you.
*Entry to the mountain is prohibited during periods of active volcanic activity.
Kurokawa Onsen
Kurokawa Onsen is a tranquil hot spring resort blessed by the bounty of the surrounding mountains. With a bathing pass in hand, you can stroll around and enjoy the open-air baths. As night falls, the "Yuakari" (hot spring lights) event begins, warmly illuminating the scenery. Held from late December to the end of March, the bamboo lanterns create a magical scene. Enjoy a stroll through the hot spring town while feeling the pleasant light.
Kumamoto Castle, with a history spanning over 400 years, is a famous castle built by Kato Kiyomasa. Located in the heart of Kumamoto City, the top of the keep offers panoramic views of the city. The castle grounds are vast and full of attractions, so much so that it would take a full day to explore them all. Although it was damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, the keep was given top priority as a symbol of post-earthquake reconstruction, and was fully restored and opened to the public in March 2021. Be sure to visit this magnificent castle that has risen from the ashes of the earthquake.
Kumamoto boasts a fascinating food culture nurtured in the fertile land overlooking Mount Aso, including dishes like horse sashimi, karashi renkon (lotus root with mustard), and ikinari dango (steamed sweet potato dumplings).
Furthermore, there are many Chinese dishes introduced during the Hosokawa clan era, as well as creative local cuisine, so please enjoy a variety of dishes that allow you to savor the local culture and history.
thank you very much.
